A police constable was arrested by the Anuradhapura Crime Investigation Unit on Saturday evening while taking a bribe from a person in the Anuradhapura town.

The policeman attached to the Anuradhapura police crime investigation unit, has told the victim that he would take his side as charges have been lodged against the victim over a robbery and demanded a sum of Rs. 25,000.

The victim, a resident of Saliyapura had told the constable that he did not have such an amount to pay.

The policeman in his reply had told him to mortgage his wife’s gold chain and pay him the money.

He had informed Anuradhapura ASP Raja Wickramanayake about the police constable.

 As the constable was taking the bribe he was taken into custody by a special police team.

The suspect is to be produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate and the crime investigation unit is further investigating into the incident.
